Snake in the Grass

Does anybody know what kind of snake this is? He's just a baby. I found him in my back yard while moving a stack of bricks. When I disturbed him, his body puffed up a little. I hope he's not in the pit viper family.

The snake is a common garter snake, it generally eats frogs,toads and earthworms, so it is quite harmless indeed.
